AARDVARK.
My freelance work load has recently gone through the roof, which I feel so blessed for. But I hardly ever get to practice in my personal illustration style. This is something I want to do more of.
So last night I asked the mases of Twitter to nominate me a word beginning with ‘A’, and this is what I got. It was a load of fun, hope you enjoy it too!

Fallen in love with Screen-Printing.

So I’ve completely and utterly fallen in love with the art of screen-printing. Myself and Grabbins just attended a weekend long screen-printing course at West Yorkshire Print Workshop. The course was run by Graham Pilling and Cameron Steward, who are both fellow Graphic Designers and Illustrators.

Day one of the course we went through the whole process of screen-printing from setting up your artwork on screen right through to printing your final designs. Graham and Cameron physically showed us how this process worked and we all had a go at printing our own ‘Go Forth and Print’ certificate. Having a go was great fun and exciting. I of course nearly printed the design upside down, but after picking up on everyone’s giggles and sniggers I soon realised what I had done before it was too late. But even so, if I did, it’s always best to learn from your mistakes, right?

Day two of the course, we all took in our own designs to screen-print. It was now our turn to run through all stages of the process and try not to mess it up! We learnt very quickly that with screen-printing, it’s all in the set up of your print. The actual printing is the easy part. Luckily with advice and help from Graham and Cameron along the way, everything ran smoothly for me and I am extremely pleased with how well my prints came out. I can’t even begin to explain how satisfying it was to see my design screen-printed. As a designer and illustrator I’ve seen a lot of my work printed, but this was by far the most satisfying. Nothing can replicate the feel and charm of screen-printed work.

Overall coming away from this weekend, I feel very inspired and educated. This course has given me another way to think about and approach my design and illustration work. I could not recommend taking part in this course more highly. Both Graham and Cameron are highly skilled and creative, and above all a pleasure to work with. Spending my weekend being taught a beautiful art by them was so so very awesome.

Behind the scenes!

Hi everyone, so I thought you all might be interested in seeing a time lapse of how I work on screen. I predominantly use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, after I’ve got a good few thoughts and scribbles down on paper. This time lapse shows me creating one of the pages from the iPad children’s story book that I am currently working on. It will show you how I take an idea from a rough sketch, through to vector and then how I apply textures in photoshop. I would have loved to have shown you the time lapse up to completion of this page but I had to cut it short as I needed to start referring to other pages from the book, which I am unable to show yet. I hope you enjoy my video, please let me know what you think and if you found this useful in anyway.

Here’s a little monster I have created for a current children’s book project I’m working on. The children’s book is being designed for the iPad, which I’m very excited about. Coming up with great interactive ideas is awesome, the reader will be able to get very involved in this story. I can’t wait to see it all when it’s brought to life. There’s still a lot of work to do before the book is complete and I’m not releasing much work from this project until closer to the release date. But I simply could not resist sharing with you this little fella.
